Thursday March 8th

On Thursday I had my ICD class once again and we continued to talk about gender and the different way it can be defined. We had an assignment to visit YouTube and look up the video "Killing Us Softly" which is a video about how women are portrayed in the media. The video did a really great job of providing images that show how negatively women can be portrayed in the media. This video also brought up and good point about how these images in the media hold women up to unrealistic expectations. Here is the video so you can see it for yourself!

  1. I think it is crazy how women are portrayed negatively in the media. It gives people a bad idea of women in our society. What especially bothers me, is the idea that is put out there in the media that women have to be skinny to be beautiful. This is not true. You can still be beautiful and not be skinny. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Having negative ideas like this cause young girls to have low self confidence when it comes to their bodies, which can continue into adulthood.

  2. I agree. I think it is so disturbing how women are portrayed in the media. What the media portray sets an unrealistic body image that is impossible to achieve. These images are what young girls compare themselves to, which leads to all kinds of problems, such as anorexia. I think the media needs to alter the images they show and start displaying women that look more like real people.
